TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League (USL) has announced its newest league, the W League. The W League will be a pre-professional league for women to develop their skills and be a pathway to the professional level, both on and off the pitch.

The addition of a pre-professional league for women is a step in the right direction to help grow the level of women’s soccer in America. This will be a great opportunity for top talent, including those who played in the Super Y League, to have a step in between youth and college soccer before heading to the professional game.

“Our goal for the W League is to use women’s soccer as a force for societal good by creating a national platform to increase opportunity, gender equity and career development,” said USL Director of Women’s Soccer Betsy Haugh. “We’re expecting to have at least 30 clubs for our inaugural season, which would provide upwards of 750 new opportunities to play, work and coach in the women’s game. We’re very excited about what the future holds.”

The W League brings opportunity for not only players, but for all levels of front office, coaching, and technical staff. Introducing a pre-professional league gives many the opportunity to grow and develop in the soccer world at any position people seem fit. With the ultimate goal of helping prepare players for their next stage of life, USL is providing resources for those looking to remain involved in the sport of soccer and those interested in a career outside of sports. The USL’s career development focus will assist players as they begin forging a path for their futures, regardless of a player’s post-playing career aspirations.

With this in mind, the W League offers endless opportunities for young girls to develop their skills on and off the pitch for a future career. Super Y League girls now have a clearer path to play at the professional level of women’s soccer, or a helpful path to grow and develop however they see fit for their future.
