The 2019 Super Y Finals got off to a fantastic start on Friday, as 120 teams from around the country arrived at the Tournament Sportsplex of Tampa Bay to begin their quests for a national title. Teams looked to make early statements by starting off the group stage with three points, and certain squads and players stood out over the course of Day 1.
Magnol was highlighted as one of the Top XI Players to Watch before the tournament began, and he did plenty to back that up in his opening game. The young forward poured in four goals in a dominant 5-1 win for Maryland Rush.
Fowler scored two goals, including the decisive penalty kick late in the game, to give Chicago Rush an opening 4-3 win over FRAM SC 03, and made some important defensive interventions to ensure all three points went to her team.
Salo scored an impressive hat-trick in her team's opener against West Side Alliance, and accounted for 100 percent of the goals scored in the match as Liverpool went on to win 3-0.
Barcelona United scored the most goals of any boys team across all age divisions, putting on a clinical finishing display in a 7-2 win over FC Tampa Rangers. The offensive onslaught will put the rest of Barcelona's division on notice.
Chicago City SC recorded the largest shutout win of any team on opening day, as its players were equally efficient in attack and defense. The team got the goal-scoring started early and never looked back in a 6-0 victory over Atlanta Metros.
BYSC Corona United's U18/19 girls were the only side in the entire field to tally eight goals, and they allowed just one to achieve a result that will certainly draw the attention of the rest of the teams in the division. Perhaps the most intimidating part of the team's attack is the fact that opponents can't focus on stopping just one or two players -- five different players scored for BYSC in today's game.
Port Washington put on a defensive clinic, shutting down their opponents en route to a 5-0 win. They'll look to keep that momentum going in the team's first ever appearance at Super Y Finals.
Romero's gorgeous finish on the half volley from a tight angle was the top goal of the first day of Finals.
In a rivalry matchup of teams based either side of New York City, it was New Jersey club Ironbound SC that claimed the bragging rights. In a match full of energy and enterprising play, Ironbound went ahead early and survived multiple spells of pressure from the Flames over the course of the match. Westchester made things interesting with a well-taken penalty kick in the second half, but Ironbound eventually walked out 3-1 winners.
