U13/14 Girls player excited to visit Phoenix, looks forward to training with pros

After careful deliberation and intensive player identification and scouting, Amalia Villarreal was selected as one of 18 players to join the U13/14 Girls team at the 2018 USL Experience, hosted by the United Soccer League’s Phoenix Rising FC.

Villarreal has spent the past two seasons in the Super Y League, most recently with Michigan-based club Liverpool FC, and has made the most of the opportunity, competing in two-straight North American Finals and winning the U12 age group in 2016.

Now, Villarreal will take on a new challenge, competing with other elite SYL players and receiving a look into the life of a professional athlete at the 2018 USL Experience.

The USL Experience provides top SYL players with some of the highest-level youth competition in the country while delivering a unique look into professional American soccer through the league’s relationship with the United Soccer Leagues, LLC, operators of the Division II USL, the new USL Division III, the Premier Development League and the SYL.

SYL: How have you enjoyed competing in the Super Y League?

Amalia Villarreal:  Competing in the Super Y League has given me the opportunity to challenge myself against players from clubs I don’t face during my other club season. It has also opened doors to new experiences like being identified by the SYL Scouting Network and the North American Finals.

SYL: What’s been your favorite experience while playing in the SYL?

AV: My favorite experience was winning the SYL National Championship in December 2016 with the U12 Girls Force FC team. Playing in the National Championships at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida was an amazing way to close out the past two seasons.

SYL: What do you most enjoy about playing with your SYL club?

AV: The best part about the U13 Liverpool FC girls is that it is made up of players from many different clubs in Michigan. Playing together under the direction of Coaches Lee Hudson, Daniel Price and Travis Roy the past two to three summers, the team has developed a great on-field chemistry that has helped us earn a place in the National Championships in Florida two years in a row.

SYL: What was your reaction when you received your invitation to attend the 2018 USL Experience?

AV: Very excited!

SYL: You’ll be participating in professional-level training, matches, interviews and more at the 2018 USLX. What are you most excited about?

AV:  Training with professional players and professional-level coaches.

SYL: What do you hope to learn at the 2018 USLX?

AV:  What it's like, first-hand, to be a professional soccer player - their day to day training and conditioning programs, what they do to prepare for a game, and what it’s like to take the field for a real game. It will give me a glimpse into the future as my goal is to become a professional soccer player.
