After several days of careful scouting, Phoenix Rising FC assistant coach Blair Gavin selected four players as his personal invitees to the 2018 USL Experience, hosted by Rising FC.
With stand-out performances at the 2017 SYL Finals last week, the Chicago Inferno’s William Martinez, Next Gen USA’s Angelina Coelho, Internationals SC’s Riley Kerber and Tri State Elite’s Caleb Borneo caught Gavin’s eye and earned themselves nods to travel to Phoenix next spring. The USLX attendees will take part in a five-day experience that includes professional-level training, competitive matches, press conferences and attending Phoenix Rising FC’s home-opener next season.
“Here during my time scouting for two days at the Super Y League Finals, I saw a lot of talented kids,” Gavin said. “I decided to choose four players, Caleb, Angelina, Riley and William. For me, they’re just technical players who made their team better and worked extremely hard. I’m excited to see them at the USL Experience.”
In total, 72 players will be travelling to Arizona early next year to take part in the USLX, with another 68 players to join the four invitees expected to be announced in late January. The third annual edition of the USLX will build upon the success of the previous two, hosted by FC Cincinnati and San Antonio FC, providing an elite, multi-day residential event that gives youth players a look into the professional ranks.
"My staff and I look forward to hosting the Super Y League's best players for the USL Experience at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex,” Rising FC Head Coach Patrice Carteron said. “We have some of the brightest and most experienced minds in soccer who are excited to pass along their knowledge of the game in an effort to improve player development for the country's top players in the Super Y League."
A part of United Soccer Leagues, LLC, which also operates the Division II USL, the new third-division league and Premier Development League, the Super Y League features a summer platform with an annual North American Championship in December.
