More than 600 teams, new Southwest Division, set to compete in 2018

TAMPA, Fla. The 2018 Super Y League season will kick off on Saturday, with more than 90 member clubs comprised of more than 600 teams and 12,000 players ready to compete.

“For 20 years, the Super Y League has played host to some of the most talented youth soccer players in North America,” said SYL Director Christian Velasquez. “With alumni such as Atlanta United FC’s Lagos Kunga and Andrew Carleton to FC Schalke 04’s Zyen Jones, the SYL has been the developmental home of many incredible athletes over the past two decades. We are thrilled to get the 2018 season underway and watch even more future stars learn, improve and compete for spots at December’s SYL Finals and next spring’s USL Experience. We wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to seeing some excellent soccer.”

The road to the 2018 SYL Finals begins this week, with two divisions set to begin play. Over the weekend, the South Atlantic Division kicks off with 38 matches before the North Atlantic Division begins play with six matches on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.

“I'm looking forward to the season starting,” said Shoreline FC Coach Joey Lafferty, who also coached the U13/14 Girls USL Experience team in 2018. “A lot of hard work and planning has gone into another season and we're hoping to have another successful summer. Having had four teams make it to the SYL Finals in the last three years, including one national champion, we're hoping to be there again this December.”

The new Southwest Division, along with its five founding member clubs, is also set to kick off for the first time in 2018, featuring the Oceanside Breakers, Rebels SC, BYSC Corona United, FRAM and the Fullerton Rangers. In total, 20 new clubs join the SYL for the 2018 campaign. In alphabetical order:

“We at Oceanside Breakers are very excited for the start of our inaugural season in the Super Y League's Southwest Division,” said Breakers Director of Coaching Frank Zimmerman. “With the competition format the Southwest Division is using, I will be able to watch our SYL teams at all ages compete one after another as we all strive to earn the privilege to play in Bradenton, Florida, at the Super Y League Finals this winter.”

In addition to the 2018 SYL Finals – with qualification slots per division to be announced at a later date – players will seek to prove themselves to earn an invitation to the 2019 USL Experience. Over 70 athletes will be chosen to visit, train and compete alongside a professional USL club. The 2018 USL Experience was hosted by Phoenix Rising FC, and the 2019 host will also be announced in the near future.

Founded in 1999, the Super Y League is a part of the United Soccer Leagues, which also operates the USL and the Premier Development League.
