Shoreline FC coach will lead U15/16 Girls at 2018 USL Experience

Selected for his body of work as a Super Y League coach over the years, Joey Lafferty will lead the U15/16 Girls team at the 2018 USL Experience, hosted by Phoenix Rising FC.

As a coach for Shoreline FC, Lafferty has proven himself by reaching multiple SYL Finals, including in 2015 where he won a U16 championship via a penalty shootout.

At the 2018 USL Experience, Lafferty hopes to translate that Super Y League success to the players under his charge. He also hopes to develop as a coach himself, learning from the professional staff of Rising FC.

The USL Experience provides top SYL players with some of the highest-level youth competition in the country while delivering a unique look into professional American soccer through the league’s relationship with the United Soccer Leagues, LLC, operators of the Division II USL, the new USL Division III, the Premier Development League and the SYL.

Shoreline FC - U15/16 Girls

Super Y League: You’ll be the coach for the U15/16 Girls team at the 2018 USL Experience. What do you hope to provide for the players under your lead?

Joey Lafferty:  I’m looking forward to bringing them my Premier, High School and Super Y League coaching experience. I hope this will aid the players I coach in enjoying a unique playing experience which they’ll remember forever.

SYL: In the Super Y League, you coach Shoreline FC. What has been your favorite experience coaching in the SYL?

JL: It has to be winning the 2015 U16 SYL Championship via a penalty shootout. The most exciting, back and forth game I’ve ever been involved in.

Then walking through Tampa International Airport afterwards with a championship trophy and getting some funny looks!

SYL: What do you most enjoy about working in the Shoreline organization?

JL:  Coaching at a club like Shoreline FC where we see ourselves as one big family is fun and rewarding. My coaching week can go from U7 kids who are just starting to play to working with U18s in their senior year before going to play in college.

SYL: What has been your overall experience as a coach in the SYL?

JL:  I love it, there’s no other league like it. A lot of hard work goes into the planning. Then eight to ten games over a six week period in the summer with the hope of making it to Bradenton again.

SYL: What are you most looking forward to in Phoenix at the 2018 USLX?

JL:  I’m looking forward to working with the best of the best. At this year’s SYL Finals I had the opportunity to scout some games and see the quality of players involved. This is going to be a special experience for us all.

SYL: The USLX can be a learning experience for coaches as well as players. What do you hope to learn from the coaches at Phoenix Rising FC?

JL: I hope to come away a better coach. We’re going to be around a professional club and coaches for a few days. I’m looking forward to seeing the sessions they’ll put on and how they get the best out of their players.
