Five clubs set to begin play in 2018 as league expands to West Coast

TAMPA, Fla. - After previously announcing the launch of an upcoming Southern California-based division, the Super Y League is proud to announce the all-new Southwest Division, along with five founding member clubs, set to begin play in 2018.

“The Super Y League couldn’t be more thrilled to grow into the Southern California region with the introduction of our Southwest Division,” said Christian Velasquez, Director of the Super Y League. “After pushing West with the Mid South Division last year, the addition of the Southwest Division grows the Super Y League  on the national stage. We are excited to see the five new member clubs compete at the SYL Finals in the future.”

Competing in the Southwest Division will be five clubs who become founding members of the league’s new West Coast presence: the Oceanside Breakers, Rebels SC, BYSC Corona United, FRAM and the Fullerton Rangers. Each club will battle regionally for the division title and the privilege to compete at the 2018 SYL Finals in Bradenton, Florida.

“The geographical expansion of the Super Y League to the West Coast continues with the introduction of the new Southwest Division,” said USL COO Justin Papadakis. “Building on the successful launch of the Mid South Division in 2017, the Southwest Division and its member clubs will greatly benefit from the support provided by the structure of the USL organization. Players from these clubs will benefit from the Super Y League’s nationwide platform and talent identification system with events such as the SYL Finals and USL Experience.”

New Southern California member clubs and players will be eligible to participate in the Super Y League’s premier events, such as the annual SYL Finals in December and the USL Experience each spring. The upcoming 2018 USL Experience will be hosted by Phoenix Rising FC, where the SYL’s top young players will participate in professional-level training, matches and be recognized at halftime of a Rising FC regular season contest.

“The Super Y League has carefully examined how it can further develop a region with well-established youth soccer organizations,” said Joel Nash, the USL’s Director of Business Development. “We wanted to find an area of need within the local soccer landscape and address that with the Super Y League’s unique platform. Working closely with our founding members, we examined those needs and are excited to apply our program to contribute to the development of these clubs and their players.”

As part of its growth on the West Coast, the SYL has partnered with respected Southern California soccer news site Soccer Nation on coverage of the league and its member clubs in the region.
