Super Y League Alumni: Where are they now?

SYL alumni make moves to advance their soccer careers

TAMPA, Fla.- The Super Y League (SYL) has no shortage of successful alumni with players like Tyler Adams, Brooks Thompson and Joey Dezart making up just a few of SYL Hall of Fame names. With youth players all around the country striving to reach the professional ranks, it is more critical now than ever to begin competing at a young age to define your unique soccer skills. For these SYL alumni, the Super Y League did just that, allowing these players to test their soccer grit among the nation’s best. Ultimately, only a few will reign supreme and earn chances to advance their soccer careers beyond youth play. 

The following SYL alumni are some of the few that have continued their soccer careers beyond the youth realm and into collegiate play with hopes of reaching their highest potential within the game. 

Maggie Johnston

Future FC Corona | University of Iowa

SYL Accomplishments: 2019 SYL Champions and 2018 SYL Finalists

What did you enjoy most about the SYL and how did it help you to develop as a player?

"The SYL was a very competitive league to be in. This prepared me to play in college because the league taught me that you have to work for what you want. That’s why my team didn’t win in 2018, but came back for our title in 2019."

Current Accomplishments: Currently playing at the University of Iowa and has started in the midfield for the Hawks this season. The Hawks won the 2021 Big Ten Tournament on April 18 and advance to the NCAA tournament beginning April 27.

Brianna Jablonowski

Long Island Rough Riders | University of Virginia

SYL Accomplishments: 2015 SYL Champions, scored a goal in the 2015 SYL Finals

What did you enjoy most about the SYL and how did it help you to develop as a player?

"I enjoyed competing with my friends."

Current Accomplishments: Top Drawer Soccer All-American selection, Two-time All-State selection at St. Anthony, United Soccer Coaches All-America selection, ranked the No. 170 player in the IMG Academy Rankings by Top Drawer Soccer, 2018 US Soccer DA Eastern Conference Player of the Year, 2018 Top XI US Developmental Academy Eastern Conference, All State All-America game participant

Stephanie Sparkowski

Long Island Rough Riders | University of Michigan

SYL Accomplishments: Super Y League 2015 & 2016 Regional Scouting Series (RSS) invites, Super Y League 2015 & 2016 RSS Region 1 All-Star Team selections, Top Drawer Soccer (TDS) Combine 2015 Super Y RSS Region 1 Girls Best XI selection, Super Y League 2015 & 2016 National Pool selections, Super Y League 2015 North American Finals U13 National Champions, All-Tournament Team selection and Golden Glove winner, selected for Super Y League’s inaugural USLX Experience in April 2016, selected for Super Y League USLX Experience in March/April 2017

What did you enjoy most about the SYL and how did it help you to develop as a player?

“What I enjoyed most about the Super Y League was being able to play with people that I didn’t play with everyday, along with getting to play teams from all over the country. Also, going to the Super Y League Finals and winning a North American Championship was an amazing experience. Playing in the Super Y League helped me develop as a player because it challenged me to get better every day since I knew I was going to be competing with top talent around the country for a National Championship.”

Current Accomplishments: Golden Glove recipient for the 2020 Masked Up Michigan Classic, 2021 Big Ten Tournament appearance with University of Michigan

Mateo Marra

Westchester Flames | St. John's University

SYL Accomplishments: Six-year captain for Westchester Flames, helped make history with the club for making it to the Super Y League Finals, received honorable mention for top performer at the finals

Current Accomplishments: First Team All-State selection, named the Westchester Journal News Section 1 Large School Player of the Year after tallying 24 goals and nine assists for Ossining High School, who went 15-1-1 en route to a league championship, earned league MVP honors, scored 17 goals and dished out eight assists as a junior

Izzy Kadzban

Alliance Academy & ACYS Spirit United | University of Florida & Chile National Team

SYL Accomplishments: Two SYL Finals appearances and two-time USLX selectee

What did you enjoy most about the SYL and how did it help you to develop as a player?

“I enjoyed the Super Y league because it offered a competitive environment over the summer in the offseason and had an awesome incentive of a tournament in the winter, which upped the intensity. Training for SYL was just like any other training, and training makes you better.”

Current Accomplishments: Scored a goal versus Uruguay off first-ever shot with senior team in her second cap for Chile’s National Team, featured for the U-20 and U-17 Chilean National team, scored 4 goals in seven games with the Chilean U-17 National Team, 2020 United Soccer Coaches Winter All-Region team, 2019-20 Top Drawer Soccer Winter State Stars selection, 2019-20 United Soccer Coaches Winter/Spring High School All-American, appeared in five matches for the Gators in the 2020 season
