Van Oekel in goal for Legion FC
The Super Y League announced last week that Birmingham Legion FC will host the fifth USL Experience in April 2020, but the club's players and coaches aren't waiting until spring to get involved with Super Y.
Legion FC's starting goalkeeper and goalkeeper coach Matt Van Oekel will attend Super Y Finals, and he will also join three college soccer coaches at the College Coaches Panel on Friday night. Aside from participating in the Panel event, Van Oekel will watch various matches to scout promising talents for the USL Experience in Birmingham.
Van Oekel made 30 appearances for Legion FC last season, making 82 saves and keeping 11 clean sheets. With over 11 years experience as a professional soccer player, Van Oekel will advise young players at finals about the road to playing soccer in college and beyond.
Van Oekel began his collegiate career at Longwood University before transferring to Rutgers for his sophomore season. Over the course of his career, he spent time with Minnesota United, Real Salt Lake, and Oklahoma City Energy before Legion FC signed him ahead of their inaugural USL Championship campaign in 2019.
There's still time to sign up for the Panel to hear Van Oekel and the other coaches speak! To register for the College Coaches Panel, click here.
