Everything you need to know on seeding, tiebreakers, and more

With the 2019 Super Y League Finals just three weeks away, every team in attendance has begun to dream about capturing the competition’s ultimate prize. With age groups U13 through U18/19 on both the Boys and Girls sides of the bracket, 40 teams will reach the advance through the group stages to the knockout rounds. With the number of groups varying by division, here’s the info you need to know to figure out your team’s path to the semifinals and beyond.

Competition Format

Two-Group Divisions (U15 Girls, U18/19 Boys, U18/19 Girls)

The first and second placed teams in each group will advance to the knockout stages. For each division, the winner of Group A will play the runner-up from Group B, and the winner of Group B will play the runner-up from Group A.

Three-Group Divisions (U13 Girls, U14 Girls, U15 Boys, U16/17 Girls)

The first placed team from each group will automatically advance to the knockout rounds. The runner-up with the most points from group play will also advance (see tiebreakers below if teams are tied on points). The three group winners will receive the top three seeds in knockout play, with the best runner-up automatically receiving the #4 seed (even if they finish with more points than one of the group winners). Additional tiebreakers will be applied as necessary in seeding.

Four-Group Divisions (U13 Boys, U14 Boys, U16/17 Boys)

The first placed team from each group will advance to the knockout rounds. Teams will be seeded #1 to #4 based on total points obtained in group play. Additional tiebreakers will be applied as necessary.

Tiebreakers

If two or more teams finish with the same amount of points, the following tie breaking procedures will be used:

1. Head-to-Head

2. Total Wins

3. Goal Differential

4. Goals Scored

5. FIFA Fair Play

6. FIFA Kicks from the Mark

** The tiebreakers listed above will be used to determine which team will advance to the knockout rounds in the event two teams are tied on points after the group stage. If the seeding for the knockout stages cannot be determined with the applicable tiebreakers listed above, then a Lottery will be conducted by SYL staff to determine the seeding for the Semi-Finals.

Overtime/Penalty Kicks

Overtime will be used in semi-final and final matches only. It will consists of two 10 minute periods -- there is no golden goal or sudden death.

Penalty kicks (best of five) will determine the winner if the match remains tied at the completion of overtime. If tied after 5 penalties from each team, there will be sudden death penalty kicks.

Only the players who finished the overtime period on the pitch can take part in penalty kicks.

Scoring

Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.

Note: Different from the 2019 Super Y League Regular Season, the 2019 Super Y Finals will operate with the new FIFA rules implemented at the start of the latest FIFA year in July.
