Soccer Club of Oceanside Breakers had quite the season in the Super Y League, with three teams earning invitations to Super Y Finals in December. But how the club plans to fund its cross-country trip is even more impressive than its performances on the pitch.

At the end of this month, the club plans to host the inaugural Oceanside Breakers Gala. Five local chefs will donate their time and cooking skills to prepare a five-course meal for the 150 people who will pay to attend, with all proceeds going toward funding the trip to Super Y Finals for the three Breakers squads who will attend.

“We have a chef, Ramiro Guerra, who I grew up with and is now a parent on one of the teams heading to Florida,” said Oceanside Breakers Director of Coaching Frank Zimmerman. “He has introduced me to his chef friends and they are all very talented. I have always wanted to put one of these fundraisers together, and when Ramiro’s daughter’s team qualified for the SYL Finals, the inaugural gala was born!”

“Our kids deserve the best. We will rally to provide them the opportunity to jump on a plane, many for the first time, and compete against champions from other parts of the country in a national competition.”

Each Breakers team that participates in the Super Y League set the goal of qualifying for SYL Finals at the start of the season, and the three that achieved it all did so with fantastic seasons. The Breakers’ Girls’ 2006 Black, Girls’ 2005 Black and Boys’ 2004 Black will all be making the trip to Florida, a second consecutive trip for the 2004 boys.

“That our younger teams have qualified is impressive and important for our club,” said Zimmerman. “One of our players who attended last year was chosen for the USL Experience, was captain of the team and had a positive experience. The opportunities for development as well as exposure and upward mobility that exist via the Super Y League are especially important for our teams."

With the support of the Oceanside community, the gala is sure to be a success and those Breakers teams will be tough to beat come December.
