Borneo displayed high quality, earned notice at 2017 SYL Finals

Chosen by Phoenix Rising FC assistant coach Blair Gavin at the 2017 Super Y League Finals, Caleb Borneo earned an invitation to the 2018 USL Experience thanks to his high-level play.

A three-year SYL player, Borneo most recently competed with Tri-State Elite, attending the 2018 SYL Finals at IMG Academy where he was identified by Gavin as one of the first four players to be invited to the 2018 USL Experience.

With his strong play at the SYL Finals, Borneo stood out from his talented peers as an exceptional player. Gavin took notice of Borneo during the group stage of the tournament and marked him as one of four players Gavin chose to personally invite.

The USL Experience provides top SYL players with some of the highest-level youth competition in the country while delivering a unique look into professional American soccer through the league’s relationship with the United Soccer Leagues, LLC, operators of the Division II USL, the new USL Division III, the Premier Development League and the SYL.

SYL: How have you enjoyed competing in the Super Y League?

Caleb Borneo: I’ve been playing in this league for three years and every year I’ve had loads of fun.

SYL: What’s been your favorite experience while playing in the SYL?

CB: My favorite experience has been going to the SYL finals in Bradenton, Florida.

SYL: What do you most enjoy about playing with your SYL club?

CB: What I enjoy most is going out to team dinners and doing fun things in our free time.

SYL: You were invited to the 2018 USL Experience by Phoenix Rising FC assistant coach Blair Gavin at the 2017 Super Y League Finals. What was your reaction to being selected to attend?

CB: I was really shocked when I got picked. I was speechless. I was extremely happy that he saw me stand out when there were so many other good players in my age group.
