USL Director of Business Development talks SYL growth, teases future news

With the recent news of the Super Y League’s future expansion to the Southern California region, league officials made a recent trip out to the area to explore growth opportunities with local clubs and communities.

During that trip, USL Director of Business Development Joel Nash sat down with the Soccer Nation Podcast to discuss why 2018 was the right time for the SYL to grow into SoCal, what he learned on his trip and to tease future upcoming news about the league’s development into the region. Nash also explores the relationship formed by the USL’s multiple leagues - including the United Soccer League, the new USL Division III and the Premier Development League - and where the SYL fits into that pyramid.

“We’ve had a ton of excitement over the past year and a half with the Super Y League,” said Nash. “Starting with a new [Mid South] Division that kicked off in 2017 in the Texas-area. We’ve been building some cool relationships out in Southern California over the last year-plus, and we decided it was the right time to bring the Super Y League into SoCal in 2018.”

“The youth side of things in Southern California, it makes me think of the old gold rush back in the day,” Nash continued. “I mean that with respect in that there’s such good quality in terms of players and clubs. I’ve been able to develop such incredible relationships with experienced soccer people and folks who care about their communities.”
