BRADENTON, Fla. – There was an upset in the first set of matches of the last day of group play at the Super Y Finals. Arlington SA defeated Nationals 2-0 to top Group A of the U14 Girls and seal a place in the semi-finals.

Good goalkeeping kept Arlington SA off the scoresheet in the fifth minute after three quick passes unlocked the defense. Nationals goalkeeper Ella McGahey did well to get down low and parry the ball before smothering the rebound.

Arlington was the dominant side through the first 15 minutes, having almost all the ball, spending most of that time in the Nationals half. But as the half wore on Nationals came more into the match, seeing more of the ball and starting to open up the Arlington defense.

The opener came in the 43rd minute as Arlington finally broke through thanks to a perfect counter attack and a long run. Erika Harwood made a 60 yard run, using her strength to hold off the defender, creating space in the box to bury the chance.

That lead was doubled three minutes later as Avery Nassetta also made a surging run, through the Nationals defense. She found enough space in the box to get a shot away, burying the chance to make it 2-0.

After doubling their lead, Arlington didn’t sit back, determined to get a third but the Nationals defense stood firm holding out. But for all that strong defense, Nationals couldn’t find a goal and will have to anxiously wait for results from other matches as Arlington top the group thanks to the victory.
