Programs transforms player development through mentorship, mental training curriculum

TAMPA, Fla. – The Super Y League and Pro Performance, founded by professional players James Riley, Luke Vercollone and Jordan Burt, have teamed up for the 2017 season to offer SYL teams access to world-class mental training and mentorship from pros.

Pro Performance is composed of experts in sports psychology, as well as professional athletes who serve as mentors. A distinguished coach with more than 20 years of experience and a U.S. Soccer Federation National “A” License, Dr. Lee Handcock serves as a partner and co-owner. Dr. Hancock has taken essential mental training content and combined it with stories and advice from pros to impact youth players. As teams go through the curriculum, a mentor shares their experiences to build into clubs’ players.

“We are pleased to announce a partnership with Pro Performance, which will be helping Super Y League teams with their approach to the mental side of the game this summer,” USL Business Development Associate Dominic Colarusso said. “The Super Y League values the psychosocial pillar of player development and think this program will be a great fit for the league.”

Vercollone – who serves as Pro Performance President – and Burt currently compete professionally for the United Soccer League’s Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

“Considering my long history with the USL, I couldn't be happier with this partnership,” Vercollone said. “I know that our programs and mentors will benefit aspiring players and I am honored to give back to the game.”

"As pros, we have been through a lot to get where we are,” Burt said. “We collected that tribal knowledge and experience from top pros looking to give back to the next generation. I can't wait to see the impact this has on the Super Y League."

Riley, who formerly competed for the Carolina Dynamo in the Premier Development League – played in Major League Soccer for 11 years, won five Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles and won an MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy in 2014 before formally announcing his retirement in 2016. He now serves as the Vice President of Pro Performance.

“My career has been greatly impacted by quality mentors,” Riley said. “We know that the Mentorship and Mental Training Programs that we've created will certainly help the Super Y League players with their goals, and I'm excited to get started."

The Super Y League, a part of the United Soccer Leagues – which also operates the United Soccer League and Premier Development League – was founded in 1999. The league currently provides approximately 10,500 players and more than 600 teams a unique experience through its advanced player tracking, strong development resources, college soccer connections and an established player pathway, which includes the Regional Scouting Series and USL Experience.
