Squad overcomes two-goal deficit, wins PK shootout at SYL Finals

Super Y League / Miramar United

BRADENTON, Fla. – Sebastian Smith scored twice from the penalty spot in regulation, and then added the decisive finish in a penalty shootout, as Miramar United rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to take a 3-2 win in PKs after playing to a 2-2 draw with the Chicago Inferno in the semifinals of the Boys U14 Tournament at the 2016 Super Y League North American Finals on Monday.

With the sides deadlocked, and chances few and far between in the two 10-minute overtime periods, the game went to the spot. With the shootout tied 2-2 through three rounds, Chicago goalkeeper Edwin Rivera came up big to deny Miramar’s Daniel Popa to open the fourth round, but United goalkeeper Noah Black returned the favor with a save on Anthony Hernandez to keep the game level.

Smith then stepped up, and shot high into the left side of the net to put United ahead. A shot that flew high and wide of the net followed for the Inferno, sending Miramar into Tuesday’s final.

Miramar opened the game with the better of the play, carrying possession forward well and putting pressure on the Chicago goal, but was unable to find a way through to break the deadlock. The Inferno gradually managed to get a foothold, and a good spell of possession was rewarded in the 22nd minute when a pass from Kaden Eberman found Hernandez in the penalty area for a low shot into the net.

Two minutes later the Inferno doubled their lead as Julian Saldana slid a pass into the right side of the penalty area that found Dimitri Huitron. His chipped cross was partially deflected by the United goalkeeper, but not enough to divert it from Hernandez, who headed home for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Miramar fought back after the break, and were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the area that Smith stepped up and fired low into the left corner past the outreached hand of Rivera. United were then awarded a second spot kick for a handball, and Smith repeated his earlier effort to the left side to make it 2-2.

Both sides pushed forward to try and take the lead before the end of regulation, and Chicago went close late when Dimitri Huitron shot just high and wide of the right post from 15 yards, but Black’s key save and Smith’s fifth-round finish in the shootout proved the deciding factor in a tightly-fought game.
