BRADENTON, Fla. – Heading into the 2016 Super Y League North American Finals, Miramar United’s U16 Boys appeared strong on paper simply by virtue of having four SYL National Player Pool athletes. Yet, only left back Ryan Delisle started among this pool.

The club’s depth certainly shone during its Group D-opening 3-0 victory against Northern Virginia Soccer Club. David Medieros recorded a goal and an assist in the opening half, Giovanni Ventura netted the winner and Delisle mustered a cross that turned into a long-distance score in the second half.

“We have a solid squad,” Head Coach Richard Jobson said. “We have a lot of talent in South Florida, and a couple guys who are on the Super Y National squad that are on the bench. We possess the ball and we try to move the ball a lot. That’s what we do over at Miramar, and you’ll see that most of our teams play the same way.”

The impressive part about Miramar’s opening scoring was that the club pushed a two-goal cushion going into the wind. Medieros stood out with some strong footwork to set up Ventura, who slotted home the game’s first goal. Then Medieros headed home a Stephen Linton cross to take a two-goal cushion into halftime.

“The idea is to keep the ball and the flow, with movement off the ball,” Jobson said. “Everybody plays. The wing backs play, our center backs make players up. We’re trying to play total soccer.”

The capper was Medieros moving from the back line to find the scoring column in the second half. His cross from the left rose toward the far right post, and with Northern Virginia’s goalkeeper reacting late to the play.

Collectively, Miramar made an early statement in the SYL Finals to open the group stage thanks to a diverse roster and the club’s possession-oriented play.

“We’re hoping that all our teams showcase their talent,” Jobson said. “We have a different type of style in South Florida. We have a lot of culture and different nationalities – Brazilians, Jamaicans. They’re born playing soccer, and it’s easy as a coach to put these kids together and make them understand structure-based soccer where they can play freely.”
